What Students Want: IPE

As a leader in interprofessional education (IPE), U-M has an edge in student recruitment in the health sciences.

student testimonialSally and Stuart_sm3291“Students who come to Michigan expect that the values of teamwork, interdisciplinary learning, and patient care are front and center in their educational experiences,” says Raj Mangrulkar, U-M Medical School associate dean for medical student education (including IPE). “That is exactly what our IPE movement has begun to build here, and the excitement this has generated among our applicants over the past couple of years is palpable.”

  • In four years as a funded initiative, Michigan Center for Interprofessional Education has sparked engaged learning and collaboration for approximately 5000 students across the 10 health science schools on all three U-M campuses.
  • Students in diverse health professional programs have progressed from just filling requirements in interprofessional courses to passionately advocating for opportunities to “learn about, from, and with each other to enable collaboration and improve health outcomes.”
  • A student advisory committee and several interprofessional student organizations add voices and vision to keep IPE advancing. Students come together at annual events, such as Team Up (photo above) and IPE in Action (video below):
