Thriving Together: Transforming Interprofessional Teamwork
Thriving Together is a collaborative initiative led by the C-IPE Systems Transformation Committee (STC) to enhance interprofessional teamwork at Michigan Medicine. By leveraging evidence-based strategies, Thriving Together supports healthcare teams in designing and implementing customized action plans that foster a culture of teamwork and improve patient care.
Since 2015, the Michigan C-IPE has expanded interprofessional education for health professional students. In 2023, the C-IPE deepened its partnership with Michigan Medicine by focusing on interprofessional teamwork in clinical settings ("downstream work"), which in turn strengthens learning environments for students ("upstream work"). Following an extensive listening tour with Michigan Medicine leaders, the STC identified key "team-sensitive metrics"—well-being, engagement, recruitment and retention, civility, professionalism, and health equity—as critical areas for improvement. This led to the development of Thriving Together, a demonstration project launching in FY25 in both ambulatory and inpatient settings.

Thriving Together employs a three-pronged approach:
- Assessment – Conducting in-depth evaluations of team dynamics, performance metrics, and operational processes.
- Training & Development – Offering tailored educational programs based on assessment findings.
- Coaching & Support – Providing hands-on guidance for team leaders through a dedicated Thriving Together (TT) Champions Team.
By integrating these strategies, Thriving Together empowers teams to foster social capital, improve communication, and create resilient, high-performing clinical environments. With the backing of Michigan Medicine leadership, this initiative streamlines improvement efforts, enhances access to institutional resources, and drives meaningful, measurable change in interprofessional teamwork.
